Ahane G.A.A. Club was founded in 1926. It is a vibrant and progressive Club catering for Hurling & Football from Under 6 to Senior, Camogie and Ladies Football. It covers the parochial areas of Ahane, Castleconnell and Montpelier and has 3 National Schools. It is situated in East Limerick approximately 6 miles from Limerick City and 3 miles for the University of Limerick. The population of the Parish has grown enormously in recent years. We welcome this growth and the challenges and opportunities it presents. Every young person in the parish is encouraged to come along to the field and perfect their skills at hurling, football and camogie.
In 1995, our spacious new clubhouse, incorporating modern dressing rooms, bar and function room was officially opened and has become a focal point for the whole community and outside of G.A.A. activities is utilised for other community activities such as Scouts, Irish Dancing, etc.
When G.A.A. Clubs are discussed in the length and breadth of Ireland, Ahane will always be one to be mentioned partly because of the success the Club enjoyed in the 1930′s and 1940′s but also the discussion of who was the best hurler of all time, was it Mick Mackey or Christy Ring. During this era, Ahane produced some outstanding hurlers such as the Mackeys, Timmy Ryan, the prince of midfielders, Jackie Power, Paddy Scanlon, Mick Hickey, the Keanes, Jimmy Close, the Herberts and a host of other inter-county stars. From the period 1931 to 1948, Ahane won 15 County Senior Hurling titles including two 7-in-a-row hurling titles, a feat which is unlikely to be surpassed. During this period, Ahane also won 5-in-a row Senior Football County titles from 1935 to 1939. Ahane’s next Senior hurling title came in 1955 and thereafter had a long famine until 1998 when Ahane beat Patrickswell in the County Final. Despite having some very good teams in the 1970′s, Ahane could not overcome South Liberties who were dominant in the East during this time. Nevertheless, Ahane had significant underage success winning the County Under 21 hurling title in 1986, County Minor hurling in 1991 and County Minor Football in 1992 and this paved the way to success in 1998 and 1999. Who can ever forget the jubilant scenes when the Daly Cup was presented to Kevin Herbert in 1998 and Clement Smith in 1999. These two wins and the huge excitement they generated within the Club also had significant impact on a group of 7 and 8 year old players in the Club who subsequently went on to win the All-Ireland Feile title in 2004, a title which had not been won by any Limerick Club since 1984. Ahane again contested the All-Ireland Feile final in 2007 but lost out to Castleknock. 2004 was truly a wonderful year for the Club when the Senior hurlers won the the County title bringing Ahane’s total to 19 titles and the leading Club in Limerick in terms of titles won. The 2004 Captain was Cathal O’Reilly.
Throughout the years, Ahane have been fortunate with the calibre of administrators, team coaches, players and supporters and will continue to be one of the most outstanding Clubs in the County in terms of producing players for County teams. Mick Mackey received the Texaco Hall of Fame Award and Ollie Moran received an All-Star Award in 2007. Ahane have also enjoyed national success in Scor winning titles for figure dancing and instrumental music.
