Doon 1 – 03 Ahane 1 – 08

Ahane’s under 14 hurling continued their fine run of late when they disposed of a very strong Doon team at Doon on Thursday 17th May.

The match started at a quick pace and it was nip and tuck throughout the whole of the 1st half with Ahane dominant in most quarters without ever getting the scores they deserved on the run of play and Ahane were very unlucky not to have found the net on at least two occasions, but for some desperate defending from the home side. The Ahane half backline trio of Matthew Hartigan, Ciarán Barry and William Brennan in particular were dominant throughout the 1st half and some fine points from play including two from Daniel Minehan and one point each from Joe Lavin, Jessie Casey, James Tuohy and Mikey Power left Ahane ahead by 6pts to 2pts at half time.

The game sprung to life in the 2nd half when Harry Healy crashed the ball to the Doon net after 5 minutes to leave Ahane looking in control, however Doon responded with a goal of their own to bring it back to 1 – 06 to 1 – 02 with 10 minutes remaining. Two more points by Ahane thanks to a free by Daniel Minehan and a good solo effort by James Tuohy left Ahane 6pts up with 3 minutes to go before Doon got a consolation point late on to leave the final score 1 – 08 to 1 – 03 in favour of Ahane.

There was many heroes on the night but it was really the Ahane never say die attitude, instilled in them by their coaching staff, which got them over the line in the end and they are now into the ACHL Division 2 Final where they will meet Kilmurry Incha.

In an entertaining game of football in Oola this evening Ahane kept their title ambitions alive with a deserved six point victory against the home side. Played in greasy conditions, Oola got the first and last score but in between Ahane showed the better craft in front of the posts and lead 1-3 to 0-2 at the interval, they then consolidated their position in the second half to win on a final score 2-7 to 1-4.

Oola were first to score from a pointed free in the opening minute. Ahane lost Andy Cosgrove to the injury in the opening minutes, but Barry Neville entered the fray and goaled for Ahane in the fifteenth minute. Five minutes later Liam O’Keeffe popped over a point to extend the lead for the visitors. Oola responded with their second point of the evening from another free but Barry Neville and Aidan Leonard added further points to bring the half time tally to 1-3 for Ahane.

Oola started the brighter in the second half and were close to scoring on a couple of occasions before Ahane counterattacked and Eanna Kennedy fisted the ball to the net to extend their lead to seven points. This really spurred Oola into attack and during the next ten minutes they scored a goal and a point; the gool was a converted penalty followed by another close in free to reduce the deficit to three points as the game entered the final quarter . Ahane lads upped their work rate in this final quarter and were rewarded with two points from Aidan Leonard and two from Barry Neville. Both players converted long range frees in this spell to restore Ahane’s seven point lead. With three minutes remaining Oola secured their only point from play to leave the final score 2-7 to 1-4.

All in all a good workmanlike performance from the Ahane lads. Well done lads. Defensively sound, but struggled at times to get the upper hand in the middle third of the pitch, but no doubting our ability to score if given fast ball into the attack. Next outing will be against old rivals Kilteely on May 25th.

Ahane lined out as follows: Kevin Keenan, J.C. Farrell, Al Dolan, Gary O’Keeffe, Mike Hayes, Ger Frawley, Aidan Leonard (0-3 , 1 free), Eanna Kennedy (1-0), Jack Murphy, Kevin Grant, Liam O’Keeffe (0-1), Andrew Cosgrove, Dean Lillis. Barry Neville (1-3, 1 free) for Andrew, Shane Sheehan for Dean and Stephen Ryan for Jack.

After a slow start to their season, the U14 Hurlers moved into top gear in the last week as they went on a 3 match winning spree in the Division 2 ACHL.

Ahane 4 -12 Kildimo/Pallaskenry 1 – 1

First up was the away match to Kildimo/Pallaskenry on Wednesday 9th May, with a new look formation which included moving Mikey Power to full forward, James Tuohy to centre forward and Daniel Minehan and Joe Lavin at centre field. The changes worked to perfection as Ahane grabbed a couple of quick goals which stunned Kildimo/Pallaskenry and they never recovered as Ahane ran out easy winners in the end on a scoreline of 4 -12 to 1 – 1 with James Tuohy recording a fine return of 1 – 5 and further goals from Joe Griffin, Dara Cullimore and Mikey Power but it was a really clinical performance from the whole squad.

Ahane 7 – 4 Crecora/Manister 2 – 2

Next up on Friday evening 11th May was the return match against Crecora/Manister who had narrowly beaten Ahane on the previous Sunday’s group match. But Ahane jumped out of the starting blocks and really got in amongst Crecora/Manister, not allowing them any space as Ahane’s half back line of Matthew Hartigan, Ciaran Barry and Conor Morrissey dominated and by half time Mikey Power had buried 3 goals in his new full forward role, with James Tuohy and Dara Cullimore also hitting the back of the net. The second half was much closer but Ahane finished well on top with the final scoreline 7 – 4 to 2 – 2 thanks to two more goals from Harry Healy and Jessie Casey.

Ahane 3 – 9 Kildimo/Pallaskenry 2 – 3

Sunday 13th May brought the return match against Kildmo/Pallaskenry at Mackey park and with Kildimo/Pallaskenry having a much stronger line up, it was always going to be much closer than their previous meeting. Ahane got some early points from James Tuohy and Daniel Minehan before Kildimo/Pallaskenry hit back with 1 – 1 inside a minute and the first half finished with Ahane just on top on a scoreline of 1 – 6 to 1 – 3 thanks to a late effort expertly blasted to the net by Mikey Power. However Ahane got on top in the second half when the full back line of Gearoid Hartnett, Tom O’ Dowd and Peter Cusack, helped by the half back line of Matthew Hartigan, Ciaran Barry and William Brennan got the better of the Kildimo forwards which led to a much better service to Ahane’s forwards and the game finished on a scoreline of 3 – 9 to 2 -3 thanks to 1 – 1 from Jessie Casey, another goal from Mikey Power and some beautiful points from Daniel Minehan.

So it’s onwards and upwards for Ahane’s much improved under 14 team and next up is Doon on Thursday 17th May in the ACHL Division 2 Semi Final.

East Junior Football League

Ahane 4-9 Fedamore 1-11

Shane Sheehan’s goal fest, stole the show as he lashed in a hatrick to secure the win for Ahane, in this third round East League tie, played in Newgarden this evening.Fedamore battled bravely throughout but squandered some good opportunities which ultimately proved the difference in the end.

Fedamore started brightly and it took our Ahane lads several minutes to secure possession and to launch an attack. Playing quick and direct ball to the full forward line paid dividends as two quick points accrued before Fedamore replied with a minor. In the tenth minute a great move involving Mike Hayes to Kevin Grant who in turn set up Shane Sheehan who netted Ahane’s first goal of the evening and opened up a four point lead. Both sides exchanged two further points before ‘Topper’ struck his second goal entering the last third of the half. Both attacks were quite potent throughout this half but Ahane were the more efficient in front of goal. As half time approached Stephen Ryan threaded a ball through to Liam O’ Keeffe, who in turn tucked it under the Fedamore keeper, for Ahane’s third goal. Fedamore countered and added a point to leave the half-time score 3-5 to 0-4.

From the resumption Ahane continued to press and Al Dolan fired over a point to give Ahane a commanding lead. It was all Ahane in this ten minute spell, and Topper struck for the last time to rifle in his third goal to give Ahane what proved to be, an unassailable lead. Eanna added another minor and it really looked curtains for Fedamore. But to their credit Fedamore never threw in the towel and battled back to dominate the last twenty minutes of this game. They picked off a couple of points to rally and minutes later were awarded a penalty for a foot block by Gary O’Keeffe. Kevin Keenan came to the rescue as he pushed the penalty kick round the post for a 45. Fedamore tacked on another two points before Adrian O ‘Sullivan settled Ahane nerves with a good point. Fedamore kept driving forward however and were rewarded with a goal and a point before Stephen Droog passed to Eanna who converted for Ahane’s final score. Fedamore kicked the last point to leave the final score 4-9 to 1-11.

Certainly Ahane deserved the victory but despite their commanding position, we found ourselves on the back foot for most of the second half, and will have to work hard at fitness levels over the coming weeks to be ready for our next opposition May 7th home to Pallasgreen 7.15pm.

Line Out: Kevin Keenan, David O’Brien, Seamus Harnett, Gary O’Keeffe, Mike Hayes, Ger Frawley, John Doheny, Diarmuid McCarthy, Darragh Madden, Eanna Kennedy (0-2), Stephen Ryan, Kevin Grant (0-1), Liam O’Keeffe (1-1), Shane Sheehan (3-2), Darren Hyland (0-1). Al Dolan (0-1) for Stephen Ryan , Seamus Bridgeman for Darren Hyland, Adrian O’ Sullivan (0-1) for Shane Sheehan, Stephen Droog for Liam O’Keeffe, Darragh O’ Malley for Kevin Keenan

U14 Camogie:

Our U14 team competed in the Feile competition in Ballygran. Ahane were missing a few regulars, but stood up to the challenge. Ahane were unlucky to lose to Adare in their first match, the result went the way of Killeedy in the second game and Ahane saved the best for last, when they displayed great skills and great team work to beat Ballygran. The panel on the day were: Emer Kenny, Aimee Tuohy, Alana Casey, Aine Mooney, Niamh O’Curry, Aoife Quinn, Emily Knapp, Aine O’Curry, Sine Hartigan, Robyn Nugent, Catriona O’Halloran, Aine Reynolds, Rachel Slattery, Aisling Herbert, Sinead Meskell, Aoife O’Halloran and Sinead Callinan

U12 Camogie

Had their first outing last Thursday, when they played Cappamore in Castleconnell School field. Both parishes had two teams on the night Ahane splitting into the Yellow and Green teams. The Green team was captained by Sinéad Callinan and included Aoife Walshe, Aisling Twomey, Orla Twomey, Emma Ridder, Sinéad O’Curry, Leah Hickey, Ciara Macken, Ciara O’Keefe and Ellen O’Sullivan. They Yellow Team was captained by Aisling Herbert and included Aimee Tuohy, Aoife O’Halloran, Lily Shortt, Ailish Reynolds, Daena Ryan, Siobhán O’Reilly, Rachel Maher and Ciara Greaney.

It was a great evening for the match with the results of the early season training clearly visible in the skills demonstrated by the Ahane girls. All the girls put in a great effort and played great Camogie. Well done to all.
