County Minor Hurling Final

Before a huge crowd mainly from Ahane last Sunday Ahane minor hurles contested the county final against Na Piarsaigh. Ahane had not contested a minor final since 1991 and were after a long break since they played there semi-final in October. Na Piarsaigh entered the game as favourites after an emphatic victory against Killmallock the week before.
At the toss Na Piarsaigh won and elected to play with the strong breeze. Ahane were first to settle and were on the score board after 2 mins with a pointed free from Tom Morrissey.

In miserable conditions Ahane Junior Hurlers faced down Pallasgreen in the Brian Butler Junior Hurling Cup Final today in Cappamore. Captain Conor Quirke won the toss and had his team play with a stiff breeze in the first half. Given the heavy rain which fell through-out that first half the wind did not prove as advantageous as it may otherwise have. Scores were hard to come by and both teams found it hard to control of the ball in the very wet and slippery conditions. Ahane goal minder Cathal O’Connor and fullback line of Brian Collins, Mike Hayes and Shane Hackett were put to the pin of their collar to keep a dangerous Pallas full forward goalless through the first half but they stuck doggedly to their task.

At the other end of the pitch Ahane’s Stephen Ryan, Niall Collins and the other Hackett on the team, Arron, in the Ahane full forward line tried their best to force to convert their chances into goals but it just wouldn’t happen for them in that first half. Even when referee Philip O’Dea awarded what Ahane supporters thought was a surprise penalty decision to Pallasgreen, the resultant penalty shot went over the bar to leave the half-time score of 6 points to 4 in Ahane’s favour.

Ahane’s team management of Louis Quirke, Tony Condon, Denis Murrihy and George Lee sent their team back out onto the pitch with just one change in the 2nd half asking Andrew Minihan to step in for Stephen Ryan. At this stage Ollie Moran moved from centre half back to centre half forward with John Doheny sitting back into the centre half back position and both players made a bigger impact in their new berths. Padraig O’Connor and Colm Carroll delivered much more ball from the half back line through-out the second half  with Ciaran O’Mara and Enda Carroll winning the dirty ball around the middle of the park. In the half forward line a very lively Mark O’Halloran and Andrew Minihan were constant thorns in the side of a never say die Pallasgreen side. O’Halloran had a goal bound shot expertly saved and  Minihan was taken down inside the big square for another penalty but this time to the Ahane side. (Read More)

Donal Óg Cusack visits the club to speak with Minor Hurling Squad

Corks 3 time All-Ireland winning and dual All-Star goalkeeper Donal Óg Cusack visited the club last Wednesday evening to speak with the Minor Hurling Squad in the run up to the County Minor Hurling final. In his chat with the lads, Donal Óg emphasized the importance of good attitude and positive thinking in everything the players do, be it at training, in preparation for a big game or during the game itself. He asked the lads to push each other and to expect more from each other on and off the pitch so as to constantly strive to improve their game.

It was interesting to hear Donal Óg reflect on his own career and his current position as chairman of the inter-county players GPA association and to still conclude that the times he spent, training and playing with his native club, Cloyne in County Cork were some of the best times in his playing career. ‘Your club is where you start playing hurling and it’s where you’ll finish playing your hurling’ he said. The session ended with a Questions and Answers session between Donal Óg and the lads during which the topics of match day preparation, responsibilities of the captain, players and subs, attitudes to alcohol and drugs and the story of Donal Óg in the dressing rooms on All-Ireland final day with the wrong boots were all discussed.

On behalf of the club and the minor panel, Ahane’s minor hurling manager, Dave Givens thanked Donal Óg for making the trip after his work-day from Cork to Limerick especially to talk with the lads. It’s probably a mark of the man that Donal Óg’s only response was that it was as much an honour and pleasure for him to be in Ahane talking hurling. Thanks for the making the trip Donal Óg, the pleasure was definitely ours!……

Ahane and Kilpeacon contested the U/14 Football (Div 2) final last Saturday in Claughaun.  Ahane togged out in Castletroy College’s blue strip for the game to avoid a clash in jerseys. Ahane captain, Sean Madden won the toss and elected to play against a very strong wind.  Ahane were under a lot of pressure from the throw in but some great defending by the full back line of Josh O Keeffe, Sean Quirke and Conor Heffernan kept Kilpeaon at bay.  The midfield pairing of Ronan Reale and Sean Madden did trojan work both defending and in attack and set up full forward Kieran O Malley to score a goal and a point and Andrew Shanahan for a point.  The pressure from Kilpeacon finally told and Ahane conceded 3 goals.  This tally would have been higher but for a number of brilliant saves from goalie, Ryan O Connell.   The half time score was Kilpeacon 3-07 to Ahane’s 1-02.

The Ahane players emerged in the second half very determined not to lose this final.  Peter O Grady, who had just recovered from a broken thumb came on in the half forward line and Padraig Harnett moved into full forward.  The Ahane half back line of Andy Rowsome, Luke O’Sullivan and Ishan Conroy took control of the game and stopped a number of Kilpeacon attacks.

This enabled the half forward line of Peter O Grady, Robert Izarut and Evan Power to drive at the Kilpeacon defence and set up scoring opportunities for Ronan Fox, Padraig Harnett and Andrew Shanahan.

Evan Power started the comeback with an unstoppable shot to the roof of the net after great play from the forwards.  Then Ronan Reale intercepted a short kick out and drove the ball to the net.  The comeback was definitely on.  More good play from the forwards resulted in a point from Ronan Fox and two from Padraig Harnett.  Kilpeacon broke out of defence but some great defending by Daragh Keogh snuffed out the danger.
